Owen Sound Mayor Deb Haswell is meeting today with the Chief of Police Bill Sornberger, and Bruce Grey Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker to talk about the pending jail closure.
Mayor Haswell says the three will meet in her office from 1:30 PM until 2:30 PM to get a handle on the full impact the closure will have and what options are left to fighting that closure.
Premier Dalton McGuintys’ government has set December 4th as the date to close both the Owen Sound and Walkerton jails.
According to Mayor Haswell, it will likely be another four to six months before the jail is completely decommissioned and the city is forced to take over the facility.
The Mayor says Owen Sound is not too keen on taking over the old jail building.
She also hasn’t seen anything in writing that the OPP will handle prisoner transfers….leaving the Owen Sound force free to operate normally with no additional cost.
