Walkerton’s picturesque Lobie’s Park is not going to become a seasonal campground anytime soon.
Brockton Council has rejected a request from the Economic Development Committee to transform the park into a seasonal campground.
Council says there are just to many challenges to deal with.
The park is located on a flood plain resulting in annual spring flooding.
Council points out only 15 of the 60 sites are fully serviced and the campsites are smaller than most seasonal campgrounds.
As a result the cost to upgrade the park to a seasonal campground is another major factor in Council’s decision.
Recreation Director Dan Wilken says before investing capital dollars into the park — Council would be wise to first create a sustainability plan.
He says a strong business plan to ensure sustainability is critical in the park’s future.
Wilken adds it may also be time to consider a new vision for Lobie’s Park.
Brockton’s Recreation Master Plan includes suggestions to naturalize the park and create trail systems along the scenic grounds.
