If you see some fires or smoke along the shoreline of South Bruce Peninsula, don’t panic.
The town is about to go to war against the phragmite reed on Saturday.
Town CAO Rhonda Cook says they’re putting a lot of their efforts into Bluewater Park in Wiarton and the Women’s Institute in Oliphant where the reed is particularly bad.
Cook says staff has been trained by an expert in eradicating phragmites and with the help of the South Bruce Peninsula fire department, they plan to roll the reed and then burn it.
She says they’re hoping this will take care of the problem once and for all.
Cook says the invasive species has taken over a lot of the shoreline in the municipality.
She says natural vegetation can be totally wiped out by phragmites if it isn’t taken care of.
Cook says the burn will take place on Saturday, weather permitting.
