The organizers of Summerfolk are happily surprised with how the community is coming together to ensure the future of the music festival.
Georgian Bay Folk Society President Ruth Parsons says they’ve already raised 12 thousand dollars since it was first announced that there is no money to host Summerfolk in Owen Sound in 2012.
Parsons says they were hoping that this is what would happen when the community first heard of the troubles they were having.
She says the goal is to raise 25 thousand dollars, which will carry them through until they get their grant money.
But Parsons says the fundraising efforts won’t stop there — she wants to make sure they have enough in contingency funds so something like this doesn’t happen again.
And now there is a benefit concert planned for Saturday, November 5th, with proceeds going to the Folk Society.
Parsons says some of the talent is local, such as former Artistic Director Richard Knechtel, and Samantha Martin who lives on the Bruce Peninsula.
But she says there are also artists who have played Summerfolk in the past — such as the Arrogant Worms, and Mike Ford who was a member of Moxy Fruvous when they played here.
You can purchase tickets ahead of time at the Folk Society office or at the Downtown Bookstore in Owen Sound … or at the door the night of the concert at the Harry Lumley Community Centre.
Doors will open there at 8 PM.
Parsons says they are still selling memberships and early bird tickets to Summerfolk to raise money that way.
