The Bruce Grey Catholic School Board has released its EQAO results — and there is good and bad news for the board.
Catholic Superintendent of Education Catherine Montreuil feels they have a lot to celebrate.
The EQAO results show students are meeting or exceeding the provincial benchmarks in Grade 3 writing and grade 6 reading, writing and math.
Grade 3 reading scores came in just a few percentage points shy of the provincial average.
Grade 3 math scores however took a bigger dip — about six per cent below the provincial average.
Montreuil says that is not surprising since schools are undertaking a major change in math and that resulted in lower scores.
Montreuil feels it’s going to take time for students to adjust to change, and predicts the scores will begin to rise over the next year or two.
Mother Teresa School in Walkerton is being recognized for its high test scores.
Staff from the school will be in Mississauga on November 7th to receive the Bette Stephenson Recognition of Achievement.
At the secondary level, work needs to be done to improve Grade 9 Applied student math scores.
Even though the students managed to outperform the province — only 51 per cent of the students meet or exceed the provincial benchmarks.
Academic students did much better — 79 per cent of students meet or exceed the Ontario average.
Montreuil says the School Board will now take all of this data and use it to come up with strategies to improve student achievement.
