The annual Doors Open event in Kincardine has become the doors closed event for this year.
Kincardine Community Services Co-ordinator Steven Murray and Kincardine tourism were responsible for the event this year after having been run for six years previous by a citizen’s committee and volunteers.
Murray says the event was a victim of numbers.
He says they were looking for about 30 volunteers to help work at some 18 sites but all they could muster up was five helpers.
Murray says they’ve advertised and spoken to groups to help out but none was forthcoming.
He suggested the lack of help at this event was really a story that has played out several times in the municipality over the past year.
He noted the Terry Fox Run was almost cancelled because of no volunteers and the Kincardine Legion almost folded for the same reason.
Murray says he believes it’s a bigger problem that needs to be addressed.
In the meantime, visitors coming to Kincardine this weekend to take in the annual tour of homes and buildings will be in for a shock.
The 7th annual is not going to run.
For six years, Doors Open attracted visitors from across the country, bringing thousands into the community during what would be considered the off-season.
No indication if the event will be run next year.
