Brockton is taking its fight to save the Walkerton Jail to the next level.
The municipality is putting together an appeal to the Provincial Ombudsman to look at how the decision was made to close the jail.
They are also calling for an investigation as to whether or not there was any mismanagement on the part of Corrections Minister Jim Bradley, Deputy Minister Steve Small as well as out-going Huron-Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell.
Councillor Chris Peabody says Queen’s Park has betrayed the people of Brockton by ignoring the interests of the municipality.
In the meantime, Brockton has dropped its Freedom of Information Request concerning the documents that helped determine the closure of the jail.
Peabody says Brockton was getting no where and couldn’t justify spending the thousand dollars in fees the province was demanding.
However, Peabody notes with a minority government now in place, and a new Conservative MPP to fight on Brockton’s behalf, there may still be some hope for the Walkerton Jail.
The Save Our Jail Committee will be working closely with MPP elect Lisa Thompson on the issue.
The Jail is slated for closure on December 31st.
