Sharon Langille is an award-winning mathematics teacher from Saugeen District Secondary School who believes high school teachers should focus on teaching subjects that they’re passionate about.
Langille’s passion is mathematics.
Although she is approved to teach other subjects as well, she feels teaching in multiple areas could be a detriment to the students.
Langille made her presentation to Bluewater Board of Education trustees recently.
She says as enrolment drops so do staff and that’s when teachers end up teaching subjects other than their passion.
Langille says the board should consider perhaps amalgamating high schools to mid-sized schools of 600 to 900 students where there would be a sufficient staff size to meet the needs of the students at the school.
She realizes that there would be many logistics to overcome such as geography but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t try when the opportunity presents itself.
Langille says if the numbers warrant then it’s worth talking about.
She admits the numbers certainly aren’t there yet but theoretically if they got to that point she would support joining together Saugeen District and Kincardine District Secondary Schools to create that mid-sized school.
