Wiarton’s Cenotaph is located on a piece of property on Burford Street.
The problem is nobody knows who owns the land on which the Cenotaph sits.
South Bruce Peninsula councillor Jim Turner is bringing a notice of motion to Committee of the Whole today — asking council to direct staff to look into exactly whose land it is.
Turner points out the land is currently being maintained by the Legion — but they don’t own the land.
He says the municipality needs to know the owner of land for purposes of taxes, water bills and property maintenance responsibilities.
Turner says the story goes that the property was deeded to the municipality in the 1920’s but the deed was never registered.
Councillors will consider the notice of motion at the next regular Committee of the Whole meeting.
