Owen Sound has a new chief of police.
The Services Board met Friday evening prior to their annual Awards Event and unanimously selected Deputy Chief Bill Sornberger as the new Chief of Police for the Scenic City.
The announcement was made by Garth Pierce, the Chairman of the Police Services Board along with Mayor Deborah Haswell, to members at the awards ceremony.
Pierce says the Board decision to have Bill Sornberger replace retired Chief Tom Kaye was reached last night, just prior to the awards ceremony,
He says it was great to be able to tell the men and women of the Service first hand.
Pierce says the Board is thrilled to have Sornberger officially in charge, saying he has shown us over the past several months all of the qualities and experience that they wanted in the new Chief of Police.
Chief Designate Sornberger will be marking 35 years of Service this October.
He was with the Toronto Police Service from October 1976 to June of 2007 when he joined the Owen Sound Police Service as Deputy.
The Chief Designate has been acting Chief since Tom Kaye retired and left the Service in March of 2011.
A formal ceremony marking the change of command will be held later this month.
