Some tense moments at Kincardine council as the future management of the Tiverton Arena was discussed.
Chair of the Recreation Committee Councillor Ken Craig reported the group had called for applications for an arena contractor to oversee the operation and they received two.
However both didn’t have the expertise that was spelled out in the call for the management position.
It was learned the two had access to qualified help during the one year contract period however both were turned down without being interviewed which didn’t sit well with some other councillors.
After much debate it was decided to try again and at that point Craig said he would have to step away from the process and someone else would have to fill in.
A new committee has been struck and the two applicants will be invited to go through the interview process to discuss their plans.
Some suggested qualified staff at the Davidson Centre could also take care of Tiverton but Ken Young of Tiverton, who has been involved in minor sports, didn’t like the idea.
He says there are some qualified people but there are some that are not and some of the things he’s seen at the arena give him the shivers.
Young says council can’t expect to find a manager with a refrigeration ticket applying for just a one-year contract.
The skilled are usually looking for a five or ten year deal.
This has all come about because the current manager has retired.
The ice goes in at the Tiverton Arena is a couple of weeks.
