It’s time to get rid of the old-style pedestrian cross-walks in Saugeen Shores.
The suggestion is in a road traffic safety study done by the Canadian Federation of University Women, Southport chapter.
CFUW Advocacy chair Carolyn Day informed Saugeen Shores town council that motorists are ignoring the crosswalks and changes need to be made.
Day says they recommend the installation of a pedestrian light that can be triggered on either side by a pedestrian or a family wanting to cross the road.
Day says they’d like to see the crosswalks at Morpeth and Clarendon Streets in Southampton be changed and a new one created where the Rail Trail bike path crosses Highway 21 near Hi Berry Farms.
The group received a sympathetic ear from Deputy Mayor Luke Charbonneau who was chairing the meeting saying it appears people are ignoring the old style flashing light crosswalks and something has to be done to ensure pedestrian safety.
The CFUW also called on the town to standardize the speed limit at 40 kilometres an hour in Port Elgin and Southampton.
Currently it’s 50-K an hour in Port Elgin and in parts of Southampton.
Staff will be looking at the suggestions in the months ahead.
