The Jewel Bridge — located behind the Amabel-Sauble school — is about to undergo repairs.
South Bruce Peninsula Public Works Manager Phil Dwyer says a consultant has told the municipality, the bridge needs some work to allow it to continue to be a vehicular bridge of limited capacity.
Dwyer says the bridge is limited to a five-tonne capacity which means it will accomodate cars and small trucks.
He says the bridge will not accomodate emergency vehicles such as fire trucks and possibly ambulances and school buses.
Dwyer says there will be some impact on residents in the nearby community.
When repairs are done, it will keep the bridge open for several more years but he forsees the span across the Sauble River becoming a pedestrian-only bridge in the future.
There has been some talk about building a new bridge to accomodate heavier traffic perhaps in a different location but that subject will come up at a future Commitee of the Whole meeting of council.
