A plan to transfer 41 long term beds from the Hanover Care Centre to Elgin Abbey Nursing Home in Chesley is not sitting well with Hanover Council.
Hanover is petitioning the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care to keep the beds in the town.
Council has passed a motion that asks the province to only approve the sale of the 41 long term beds on the condition that the beds remain within Hanover.
Mayor Kathi Maskell fears once the beds are gone — they will be gone forever.
Maskell adds Hanover will be calling on its neighbours for assistance and will seek support from Grey County Council.
Maskell has already talked to Deb Matthews, the Minister of Health and Long Term Care.
She is now talking to the South West Local Health Integration Network.
Maskell says this is an issue that Hanover will fight for and do whatever it takes to keep those beds in town.
Close to 200 people attended a recent public meeting on the matter — and they voiced their displeasure with the proposal.
