As water meters continue to be installed throughout South Bruce Peninsula, you will soon get an instruction sheet on how to drain the meters, should you be leaving your homes and cottages for an extended period of time in the winter.
Manager of Public Works for South Bruce Peninsula Phil Dwyer says the water meters need to be drained much like basic water pipes to avoid freezing damage.
Dwyer says the information will inform the homeowner how to drain the pipes above the ground down into the basement of the home and at the same time, drain the water meter so it’s protected from freezing as well.
Town council has been debating as to who would be financially responsible if some water meters are damaged through winter freezing.
It’s been suggested the home owner would have to bear the cost.
The information sheet on how to successfully drain water meters for the winter if homes are left unattended, will be out in the next few weeks.
