The Conservative MP for Huron-Bruce is amazed by the quick response of emergency services and the resilience of Goderich residents following Sunday’s tornado.
Ben Lobb credits town Council, Huron OPP, the Goderich Fire Department and responders who came in from outside town to help with security, cleanup and restoration of utilities.
He notes the community spirit of Goderich residents who have been helping each other since the storm hit.
Federal disaster aid is on the way.
Lobb says now that Council has formally approved the state of emergency to free up five-million dollars in provincial aid — money from Ottawa will kick in.
The initial payment from the province can be up to 13-million dollars then the federal government will pay out aid on a cost-shared basis.
Lobb says federal government will gradually cover more of the aid costs as contributions increase but the province will administer the disaster aid payments.
He notes the public funds to be paid are over and above insurance settlements arrived at by homeowners and businesses.
