An inquest into the shooting death of former Owen Sound man in Kamloops, British Columbia will be held next May, 2012.
50 year old Wilbert Bartley was shot and killed by a Kamloops Mountie on July 30th, 2010, when Kamloops RCMP opened fire on an SUV he was driving in the parking lot.
The B.C Coroners Service will hold the inquest from May 14th to May 18th next year at the Kamloops Law Courts.
Despite the call for an inquest into the shooting death, Bartley’s mother is still petitioning to have charges laid.
An outside police agency, Calgary Police Service, investigated the shooting over a 4 month period.
The Calgary police report went to the Crown in B.C, which announced in May of this year that there was insufficient evidence to secure a conviction against the officer involved.
Catherine Bartley said she will be attending the inquest into her sons death.
She still wants the police officers involved to be charged and said she will continue to pursue that.
On July 30th, 2010, at about 6:15 PM — Bartley left the Esso station after purchasing two items.
At some point, two plainclothes Kamloops Mounties pulled an unmarked green minivan in behind the vehicle.
Police later said they wanted to speak to him about an ongoing investigation.
Bartley backed into the unmarked van, damaging its passenger side.
At that point, three shots were fired through the 4Runners front windshield. Bartley is believed to have been killed instantly.
Bartley, who had a lengthy criminal record, did not have any outstanding warrants or conditions and was not wanted by police for any crime at the time.
The inquest next year will be presided over by coroner Mark Coleman and a jury will hear evidence from subpoenaed witnesses to determine the facts surrounding this death.
