Time is running for young Bruce County women to apply to be the next Queen of the Furrow.
The deadline for applications is today.
The 2010 Queen, Janette Hammell, tells Bayshore Broadcasting News it’s a great experience for women who want to learn more about agriculture.
Hammell says the Queen also acts as an ambassador to promote farmers.
Hammell notes she has talked to a number of children about different topics — from farm safety to where their food comes from.
Hammell admits it’s a busy year because you attend a number of fall fairs and plowing matches — but she calls it “a tremendous experience.”
The Queen of the Furrow competition is open to young women who are between 16 and 25 years old.
To apply — women need to fill out an application, as well as prepare a two to three minute speech and also be prepared to plow.
The 2011 Queen will be crowned at the Bruce County Plowing Match at the Hammell farm on Bruce Road 10 on Monday September 5th.
