The quick work of Saugeen Shores firefighters limited the damage to the Queens Bar and Grill in downtown Port Elgin.
The fire department was called just before 4:30 AM on Tuesday after a resident in one of the apartments above the restaurant called 9-1-1.
Fire Chief Phil Eagleson tells us they arrived on the scene two minutes later and found flames shooting through the roof of an addition behind the building.
Eagleson says they had the fire under control about an hour later.
Eagleson credits the quick action of firefighters for stopping the blaze from spreading to the main 117 year old building.
Eagleson notes if the flames were not contained to the addition — they would have had a tougher fire to fight.
About 20 people who live in apartments above the restaurant had to be evacuated.
No one was hurt.
Eagleson says the cause of the fire is under investigation — but it’s not considered suspicious.
In fact, Eagleson believes the fire started outside the addition.
The Queens is expected to be closed for a few days now to repair the damage to the washrooms located in the addition.
