Kincardine Council has decided to stay the course when it comes to managing and operating the Tiverton Sports Centre.
As a result they’re looking for a new contractor to fill the position.
The current manger is retiring and Kincardine staff suggested the municipality look after the staffing, management and operation of the facility.
Chair of the recreation committee, Councillor Ken Craig says the idea was to share the expertise of the staff at the Davidson Centre with the Tiverton operation, along with hiring some part time and casual help.
The committee said the concept would save the town almost 16 thousand dollars.
Some councillors questioned the savings saying the money would be chewed up on training and perhaps overtime.
In addition, the Tiverton and District Minor Sports was in favour of the contract management position.
They referred to the additional facilities at the Davidson Centre which would likely tie up the current staff there and there was fear the Tiverton operation would fall between the cracks if the staff took over management duties.
The group says one of the advantages of a contract management position is the person becomes a single point of contact in emergencies and last minute changes.
That would be lost under the staff option.
Council saw the advantages and decided to stay with what has been there in the past.
Councillor Maureen Couture voted against the motion saying there’s no reason why municipal staff in Kincardine couldn’t handle the Tiverton facility.
Couture says the concept is now used with the water system.
