There’s still no review set into the decision to close the jails in Owen Sound and Walkerton.
However as we told you last month — the proposed closing date has been set for October 31st.
The Liberal candidate in Bruce Grey Owen Sound for this October’s provincial election want to keep the jails open — which flies in the face of his own party’s plans.
Kevin Eccles is calling for a review of the budget numbers that led to the recommendation to his Liberal government for closure of the jails.
Eccles tells Bayshore Broadcasting News he’s contacting the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services about the plan, but so far there’s nothing to report.
Eccles says until the information is provided for an independent review — he wants the Ministry to keep both the Owen Sound and Walkerton jails open and fully functional.
Eccles doesn’t see the Owen Sound and Walkerton jails staying open in the long term — but he believes a review will prove its cheaper to build a jail in this region then to transport criminals to Penetanguishene.
The New Democrats claim they will keep both jails open if elected on October 6th while the Progressive Conservatives say they will review the issue.
