South Bruce Peninsula councillor Jay Kirkland’s suggestion that the municipality have at-large elections rather than the ward system has taken another step toward possible reality.
Council has approved sending the concept to the public for its input.
Councillor Kirkland says a public meeting will be set up sometime within the next year to present what council has in mind and to listen to what the public thinks is the route to go.
Staff will prepare documentation with two options for council composition being presented which includes four councillors and one mayor elected at large or five councillors elected at large, along with a Mayor and Deputy Mayor elected at large.
Kirkland says he can live with a seven-member council but believes even a five member council consisting of three councillors, a mayor and deputy mayor would be workable.
The current council has eight councillors and a mayor.
If there are to be any changes to the voting system, it will be in effect for the next municipal election in 2014.
