Saugeen First Nation Chief Randall Kahgee is expressing concern about what appears to be happening between Ottawa and Aboriginal land claims.
Bayshore Broadcasting News informed Chief Kahgee about a report from the Aboriginal People’s Television Network that states Ottawa is moving to cut off specific land claims negotiations.
Apparently October 16th has been set as the deadline and after that date all previous offers made at the table by federal officials will be formally revoked.
Kahgee says he’s not sure what led to the decision but from a claims perspective, he says, it’s not good in the context of what is trying to be promoted in Canada in terms of reconciliation.
Kahgee says Saugeen First Nation has two land claims underway which he admits are moving along at a snail’s pace.
He says the local claims are in the litigation stage but still could take years to reach a conclusion.
Kahgee says they maintain they have never given up the title claim to the Lake Huron lake bed.
Kahgee says he hopes to see some progress in their land claims in the near future.
