If the province won’t do it, then Saugeen Shores will investigate whether or not it can.
At the annual general meeting of the Southampton Residents Association on the weekend — the subject of beach water testing came up again.
The province hasn’t done any regular testing of beach waters in Southampton for several years because of cutbacks and some suggested it was time to take matters into their own hands.
Southampton residents and former town councillor Duncan McCallum suggested the town and the residents association split the cost of testing the waters during the summer months.
Saugeen Shores Mayor Mike Smith liked the idea assuming money could be found in the budget.
He says it would cost about 10 thousand dollars to the test the beach waters during the summer.
Meanwhile, the President of the Residents Association Ken Robertson says the group would entertain the idea but only after trying again to get the province to do the work and pay for it.
He says it’s a provincial responsibility and they should be footing the bill.
