The Grey Bruce Health Unit is taking a different approach to beach management this summer.
Andrew Barton — the Manager of the Safe Water Program — says they want to give more information to swimmers before they jump into the water.
Barton says by providing the information — people can make informed decisions about whether its safe to swim or not.
Barton says a good measuring tool is if you can’t see your feet in waist deep water, it is best to stay out of the water.
Barton says posting closings at beaches is not the best because it doesn’t give the current water conditions.
He notes testing prior to posting the closures takes at least a full day and the water might be fine the day of the posting.
Barton says historically — the water in this area is high quality, which has been confirmed over many years of testing.
Now the health unit will close beaches in response to factors such as sewage bypass incidents or spills.
Barton also points out new beach signs and their website have been redesigned to include a wider range of information to help the public make healthier and better choices about swimming.
