A popular federal program designed to make your house more energy efficient is staging a return.
Our federal government has re-introduced the Eco-energy Retrofit Program, designed to provide savings for homeowners and the environment.
The program provides grants to homeowners to get rid of existing windows, doors, insulation, furnaces and other energy-robbing items and replace them with environmentally-friendly alternatives.
Huron Bruce Conservative MP Ben Lobb says homeowners are not the only people who will benefit from the program.
The Eco-energy Retrofit Program will also see contractors and building supply stores generate added revenue from increased sales of energy efficient replacement items.
Lobb advises that if you are considering environmentally-friendly retrofits in your house there is a way to make sure you benefit from the program.
He says you need to have an energy auditor look over your home with an eye to what you want to replace.
You have the cost-estimate paperwork in hand when you go to a contractor or building supply outlet or you likely won’t qualify for the grant.
The 450 dollar cost of the auditor’s evaluation is included in the grant which can be anywhere up to a maximum of five thousand dollars.
The federal government estimates homeowners who have already taken part in the program have seen an average savings of around 20 per cent on their energy bills.
The Eco-energy retrofit program runs until the end of next March.
