Employees at Leader Resources in Kincardine are facing layoffs.
This after the company didn’t receive provincial contracts for two of their wind farms in Huron and Bruce Counties — in Arran Elderslie and Central Huron.
Communications Manager Heather Boa says the Ontario Power Authority changed the rules in early June — which meant that companies from other areas in the province could apply for wind projects in Huron and Bruce.
She says the OPA gave 400 of the 700 allocated megawatts in Huron and Bruce to projects from the West London area.
Boa says that means Leader has to sit on their projects and wait for the next round of provincial approvals.
She says that could be about six months from now, but it all depends on the outcome of the October provincial election.
Boa says the company did have to lay off some of their 25 employees and others had to be shuffled around, but she’s hopeful they can be brought back if the projects are approved in the future.
