A Walkerton school has wowed the Ministry of Education.
The province is hailing Mother Teresa School in Walkerton as a shining example of what other schools should strive to be like.
Superintendent of Education Catherine Montreuil says the school has shown steady growth in reading, writing and math over the last three years.
Special education students particularly excelled with scores double that and in some cases tripling that of the provincial average for other special education students.
The school is also being recognized for closing the gender gap in the reading, writing and math scores between girls and boys.
Because of these achievements — the Ministry of Education is showcasing Mother Teresa School on it’s EQAO website under school success stories.
Montreuil says schools across Ontario will look to the small Walkerton school for tips on student academic achievement.
She credits the schools success to three main factors:
– Mother Teresa sets out high expectations for its students.
– The school has excellent tracking methods to identify students that require extra help.
– Mother Teresa has a strong sense of community.
Montreuil says the Catholic Board will now work with other schools within the district to help them apply the same successful strategies to their classrooms.
100 per cent of grade three students in Mother Teresa achieved 70 per cent or more in mathematics, 94 per cent of students achieved 70 per cent or more in writing and 54 per cent achieved 70 per cent or higher in reading.
At the grade six level students 80 per cent of students achieved 70 per cent or more in reading, writing and mathematics.
