Students, teachers and staff are bidding farewell to the old Alexandra Public School today in Owen Sound.
The 100-year-old facility is slated for demolition this summer…to be replaced by a new, smaller and more efficient structure on the same property.
Principal Denise Horvath says a number of small tributes to the old school are planned today.
Kids will leave drawings, signatures and memory quotes on the walls…and there will be a farewell announcement at the end of the school day.
Horvath says everyone is excited to get into the new school — which Horvath tells us will have a number of new features.
There will be “smart boards” in every classroom to enhance student learning — a big gym, more energy efficient heating, and most importantly…no more huge staircases.
Horvath notes the old Alexandra school had 5 levels — making it an unsafe environment for the kids, who had to trek up and down the stairs daily.
There is also a tribute to the old building planned for the new school.
Horvath says they will have the original school bell housed inside a monument, one of the resource rooms will be designated as a “heritage room”, and they made an old countertop from the school into a new wooden table.
