This year’s Cops for Cancer campaign in Grey Bruce has raised over 188 thousand dollars.
That total was announced at Monday morning’s celebration breakfast.
The goal was 200 thousand dollars — but Fundraising Co-ordinator Jen Wright is thrilled with how much money they raised and they are still collecting funds.
The money will support paediatric cancer research and will help cover the transportation costs of Grey Bruce families who travel for cancer therapy.
Wright says they also have dozens of ponytails that will be sent to Pantene to make wigs for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
The Cops for Cancer campaign has now raised over two and a half million dollars since it started in Grey Bruce 15 years ago.
Wright says they will also expand Cops for Cancer to include people who want to walk or run and raise money for the campaign.
Sarah Bouma is the Research Manager for Ontario Cancer Society.
She says the people who participated in Cops for Cancer are remarkable for their commitment and passion to the cause.
Bouma notes they are winning as children with cancer today have an 82 per cent survival rate — that is an 11 per cent increase from 10 to 15 years ago.
She says they are creating a world where children and families do not have to live in fear of cancer.
But Bouma notes children who are cancer patients face a lifetime of other health effects so more support is needed.
