Three students from West Hill Secondary School have come to the support of their laid off teacher at a recent Bluewater District School Board meeting .
Courtney Couture, Catharine Healy both of Owen Sound and Cynthia Buckton of Tara are Grade 11 students who have taken the Culinary Arts course at the school.
Buckton says the course will remain but the teacher has been laid off.
She says it was an unfair layoff because the teacher was the only qualified hospitality and tourism teacher at the school.
Buckton says they’ve heard another teacher on staff will take over the class although that person is not believed to have the qualifications.
The group in their presentation to trustees says that would be like a welder teaching medicine.
The trio hopes the board will reconsider the layoff and re-instate the unnamed teacher before the Fall.
They stated they had a petition of students and parents totalling 220 signatures calling for the re-instatement of the instructor.
The board made no comment on the presentation.
