If the Port Elgin and Southampton legions have their way, when soldiers return from Afghanistan duty this July, there will be a ton of yellow ribbons displayed in the town to greet them.
Port Elgin president Kathryn Eastwood and Southampton president Marilyn Noble made a presentation to Saugeen Shores council asking for council’s support on the yellow ribbon campaign.
Eastwood says the campaign is underway now and residents are urged to purchase the ribbons at various business in Saugeen Shores.
She then encourages all businsses and private citizens to decorate their homes and places of work, especially along the main routes into town.
Council has instructed staff to see if the bridges in the area can be decked out in the ribbons as well.
Eastwood says she doesn’t know the number, but she knows soldiers serving in Afghanistan will be returning to Saugeen Shores in July when Canada’s main contingent returns.
Eastwood also asked council to support their efforts in having Highway 21 from Kincardine, north to Saugeen Shores and through to Owen Sound, designated as the Bluewater Veterans Highway.
Highway 21 currently has that designation from Goderich to Kincardine.
Council will approach the Ministry of Transportation with the idea.
Eastwood says it will take at least a year to get the designation.
