With the opening of the new Splash Pad at Kelso Beach comes a reminder from the City of Owen Sound and the Grey Bruce Health Unit.
Remember the Smoke-Free Sport and Recreation Spaces Policy.
Health Unit Program Manager Angela Newman says the policy was set up to protect children from second hand smoke.
She notes it also helps care for the environment, and sets a positive example for our kids.
In 2009 — Owen Sound developed a policy to ban smoking on any public playing field, playground equipment zone or other public recreation space.
Newman says the ban restricts smoking within a nine meter fringe area around the perimeter of established public fields such as baseball diamonds, soccer fields, lawn bowling, tennis courts, athletic tracks, football fields, splash pads, pools and ice rinks.
The ban also includes city parks like Harrison, Kelso Beach and Bayshore.
Newman notes there are posted signs in these areas.
