The battle to save the jails in Owen Sound and Walkerton is stepping up.
Staff in Brockton have been instructed by Council to file a freedom of information request with the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.
Mayor David Inglis says they want to look at the background reports used by Minister Jim Bradley to justify the cost savings of closing the Walkerton and Owen Sound jails.
Inglis doesn’t think the reports actually show the plan will save money — and they don’t justify the economic and social harm it would cause in the region.
Officials in Brockton and Owen Sound have repeatedly asked for the provincial numbers.
They want to know how much money the transportation of prisoners to the Super Jail in Penetanguishene will cost in comparison to keeping the local jails open.
The officials were at Queen’s Park this week — asking again for the numbers while delivering a 12 thousand name petition to keep the jails open.
