MP’s including Conservatives Ben Lobb of Huron-Bruce and Larry Miller of Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound get back to work on Parliament Hill later this week — exactly one month after Canadians voted in a majority Conservative government.
Lobb says the 307 Members of Parliament will hit the ground running on Thursday.
That’s when a new Speaker of the House will be elected to replace former Kingston-area MP Peter Milliken who chose not to run for re-election last month.
On Friday the Governor-General delivers the Throne Speech setting out the Harper government’s agenda for the session.
Finance Minister Jim Flaherty re-introduces the budget on Monday June 6th — it’s basically the same spending plan that forced the election when the New Democrats didn’t support the old minority government.
Lobb says a long-standing weapons-related issue may be resolved quickly in the new session.
He expects a vote to scrap the controversial and expensive long-gun registry could come as early as this summer.
Lobb looks forward to what he hopes will be faster passage of legislation with the first majority government in almost a decade.
He admits it will be a different experience with the Conservatives holding a majority and that debate with the NDP Opposition will be spirited at times.
