Meaford mom Maggie Holmes has conquered Mount Everest in memory of her late son Ryan.
Following weeks of training and preparation, Holmes flew to Nepal back on March 26th and began her trek up the mountain three days later.
Holmes says the journey was extremely challenging but also very rewarding and an incredible experience.
During the many challenges along the way, including snowstorms and altitude sickness, Holmes says Ryan’s memory helped push her forward.
Ryan was just 20 when he took his life after battling psychosis since the age of 15.
Holmes decided climbing Mount Everest on the 5th anniversary of his death would be a great way to raise awareness for mental health issues, as well as show people that personal challenges can be conquered.
She did just that, reaching Everest Base Camp on April 9th, 12 days after setting out from Luckla.
Holmes’ goal was to raise $29,035 — or one dollar for every foot Everest is high.
She surpassed that goal by raising a total $30,435, which will go towards a Mental Health First Aid training program at Georgian College.
The program is designed to train people on how to recognize signs of mental illness in youth.
Holmes says climbing Mount Everest was a once in a lifetime personal journey that she will never forget.
She adds the highlight of the trip was celebrating in a dingy pub in Luckla, when members of her climbing group put “Maggie May” on the jukebox and sang to her.
