The Ontario government has paid out more than 72 million dollars in compensation to victims of Walkerton’s tainted water tragedy and their families.
Attorney General Chris Bentley says over 99 per cent of the more than 10 thousand claims have been resolved, and the rest are to be resolved by the end of this year.
There were over 10 thousand claims (10,189) — and 92 hundred (9,275) claims qualified for compensation.
Seven people died and about 25-hundred became ill after E. coli contaminated the water supply in Walkerton in May 2000.
Stan Koebel — the former manager of Walkerton’s utilities commission — was jailed for one year while his foreman brother, Frank, was sentenced to nine months of house arrest.
Walkerton is now home to the Walkerton Clean Water Centre, which provides hands on training for owners and operators of water systems.
