If everything falls into place, the City of Owen Sound will have several new solar energy projects.
It’s different than the current project to be installed this summer that the City owns and has been approved for under the micro fit program.
This endeavour will see the City lease space on eight of their properties to Solar Stream Green Energy Group Inc out of Barrie.
Chris Hughes — Owen Sound’s Environmental Superintendent — says Solar Stream would install the ground mounted systems if they get approval from the Ontario Power Authority.
Hughes says the city would make 22 to 35 thousand dollars per property, translating into 4.6 million dollars over 20 years.
The ground mounted solar panels would be installed at the closed landfill sites in Georgian Bluffs and Meaford, and three properties in the city — near the industrial park and at the airport.
The sites would house 500 kilowatt and four 250 kilowatt installations.
Hughes recognizes it may all be for not.
The plan is dependent on OPA approval before this Fall’s provincial election.
