A Seniors Needs study is out with five areas of concern as the population in Bruce County and Owen Sound continues to age.
The Bruce Community Futures Development Corporation Chair, Barb Fisher, says by 2035 — roughly 44 per cent of the population of Bruce County and Owen Sound will be over 55.
Fisher says because of the trend, the primary objective of the Seniors Needs Analysis is to understand what the concerns are in the senior community.
Five main themes were developed in the study, which was released this week.
The biggest concern expressed by Seniors deals with community support services.
Fisher says more elderly residents want to stay in their homes later in life and Community support services need to be enhanced, to allow that to happen.
Health care services was the second highest concern among seniors, as they feel the centralizing of hospital services will mean many can’t live where they want.
The other key concerns were Transportation, Housing and Volunteerism or re-employment.
Fisher says the Development Corporation is looking addressing the concerns over the next five years, and she says it won’t simply sit on a shelf somewhere.
