Students from 16 schools will learn about playing safe today at the Port Elgin Plex.
The War Amps is hosting a PLAYSAFE display, and students will hear stories of kids who lost their limbs due to accidents.
James Jordan, a graduate of the War Amps Child Amputee Program, was born a left arm amputee, and he’ll be on hand to share his story.
Jordan has been a member of CHAMP since he was six months old, and now works for the War Amps to bring messages of safety to children.
He says many children who lose their limbs due to accidents around their neighbourhood or on the farm.
He adds many of the time these accidents could have been prevented had the children known what they were doing was dangerous.
Jordan says their education program focuses on going into schools and talking to children about potential dangers.
He says when kids hear these stories from others their age who have been seriously injured, the message seems to hit closer to home.
Jordan says sometimes kids “aren’t careless, they’re carefree.”
Today’s Safety Festival takes place from 9 AM until 3 PM.
