Saugeen Shores residents are doing their part to extend the life of the municipality’s landfill site.
From a life expectancy of just over 15 years in 2008, that expectancy has increased to just over 18 years.
Mayor Mike Smith says it’s because residents have become more aware of recycling and what they throw into the garbage.
Mayor Smith says a landfill site is about the most expensive asset a municipality has.
He says it’s pretty easy to build a new arena but it takes a huge amount of money to find and get a new landfill site.
He says it’s a horrendous approval process.
Smith says part of the success of extending the life of the landfill site was the implementing of a bag tag system.
He says it was a hard pill to swallow for taxpayers at the beginning but it’s delivering results now.
