Bruce Grey Owen Sound Federal NDP Candidate Karen Gventer feels her party is gaining a lot of momentum.
Gventer spoke about her parties recent gains at Wednesday night’s all candidates meeting at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.
She was joined on stage by fellow candidates Emma Hogbin of the Green Party, Liberal Kimberley love and Conservative incumbent Larry Miller.
Gventer feels the NDP’s message is starting to resonate with Canadians — and she credits leader Jack Layton’s recent surge in the national popularity polls to that fact.
The latest Federal Popularity Polls shows the NDP are almost neck in neck with the Conservatives — with the New Democrats at 31 per cent compared to 34 per cent for the Tories.
The Liberals have slipped to 22 per cent.
She says there was no real turning point that suddenly propelled Layton up the polls, but rather a number of issues that she feels the NDP have a strong platform on.
Gventer feels the national popularity of the NDP will lend a lot of support to her campaign, and adds she got that feeling by speaking to people in the riding.
At the latest debate — a number of familiar issues were brought up to the candidates.
Agriculture, healthcare, military issues and the economy were some of the main talking points.
The federal election is set for Monday, May 2nd.
