More groups are coming out in opposition of the proposed underground nuclear waste storage facility in Kincardine.
The Federal New Democrat Party says there’s no way to know exactly what could go wrong with a project so close to Lake Huron.
NDP Environment Critic Peter Tabuns says Ontario Power Generation is just guessing at possible consequences, and even compares potential problems to the issues the Japanese are having after a major earthquake and tsunami.
Greenpeace is also against the plan to build the storage facility 680 metres below ground near Kincardine.
Spokesman Shawn-Patrick Stensil says OPG just doesn’t want to admit there is no truly safe way to store nuclear waste.
He says there is no fail-safe way to isolating these toxins.
Meanwhile, OPG vice-president Albert Sweetnam says there is virtually no movement of water at the site, and the vaults would store many different items.
He says they would not store used nuclear fuel in the facility.
