Despite being thousands of miles away in her riding of Saanich – Gulf Islands British Columbia — Elizabeth May made time to pay Bruce Grey Owen Sound a visit.
The Federal Green Party Leader appeared via Skype link Monday night at local Green candidate Emma Hogbin’s downtown Owen Sound office.
May spoke about the Green platform and answered a number of submitted questions.
She began by briefly lamenting her exclusion from the federal leader’s debate, but added it was somewhat compensated by a push to get the Green message out through social media outlets such as facebook and twitter.
May urged voters who were still undecided to vote Green, because that would send a message to the other three parties that they weren’t getting the job done.
When asked how the Green party would ensure infrastructure funding would not just go to large urban centres, May explained they have money set aside to ensure rural areas are funded as well.
The rising price of gas was also a hot topic — May says through a carbon pricing system, her party would use pollution revenue to lower taxes and introduce income splitting for families.
She also spoke about the need for national food policy to ensure agricultural stability for local farmers.
May feels many farmers are not able to make ends meet, and a new policy must be put in place on a municipal, provincial and federal level to ensure the people who grow our food can continue to do so.
