A resident on High Street in Southampton, thinks the summertime Thursday night Cruise nights, should cruise somewhere else.
Wendy Putnam was speaking on behalf of her mother Mary at a Saugeen Shores town council meeting recently and said she’s not against Cruise Night but was against the car-showing event being held in a residential area.
The car display is held every Thursday from May until September at the foot of High Street in Southampton.
Putnam says in her letter that there are several other areas where the weekly event can be held, including the parking lot at the Plex.
She says they’re tired of people leaving behind garbage every week and sitting on their lawn.
The presentation was accepted with no further discussion from council.
Meanwhile, Councillor Gary Brown, who has run the nights since its inception, says the location is part of the success of the event.
He says he’s traveled to similar events across Ontario and those held in parking lots is declining in interest from classic car owners.
Brown suggests everyone who takes part or visits Cruise night is conscientious when it comes to keeping that area of High Street neat and tidy.
He says he doesn’t believe the problem of littering is nearly as bad as it’s being made out to be.
Cruise Nights in Southampton have been a regular Thursday night summer staple since 1995, raising over 167 thousand dollars for the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation.
This year’s Cruise Night begins in late May.
