The importance of agriculture will be the focus of a workshop for almost 800 students in southern Grey and Bruce.
The two day Roots of Bruce 2011 program is being held starting today, and students in grades 5 and 6 from both school boards will attend half-day workshops.
Committee member Elizabeth Grant says they will have interactive workshops at the Walkerton Agriculture Society buildings to teach students the role agriculture plays in the community and the value it has.
She says they will also focus on separate farm issues such as safety and animal diseases.
They will also learn about environmental practices and the importance of farmers having a sustainable practice.
Grant says this is also the perfect age to target, as the children are starting to become more aware and involved in food choices and they want to help kids make safe and healthy choices.
She says it’s also a good way to teach them how the food gets from the farm to their plate.
Many different farmers and producers will be on hand to provide hands-on workshops, as well as veterinarians.
The events run from 9:30 AM to 2:15 PM each day.
