Three people have been nominated for this year’s Tommy Cooper award, and the winner will be named tonight.
The Tommy Cooper award goes to the person who has made the greatest contribution to agriculture and rural living.
It commemorates the late Tommy Cooper, a well known provincial government agricultural representative in the area who was instrumental in founding the Grey Bruce Livestock co-operative.
Nominees this year are:
Lorne Underwood of RR # 1 Clifford. He is nominated by the Bruce County Federation of Agriculture. Lorne has been a director representing Carrick township on the Bruce Federation of agriculture since 1998. He was president from 2007 to 2010. Lorne is also a founding member of the Clifford-Oakville-Hanover Foodgrains project which began in 1995.
Paul and Dorien De Jong of RR #2 Dundalk were nominated as a couple. They are sponsored by the Grey county Federation of Agriculture and Egremont Proton Federation of Agriculture.
Paul was the youngest president of the Grey County Federation of Agriculture and was instrumental in the introduction and implementation of the “One Voice Campaign”.
As President and CEO of the Dundalk District Agricultural society, Dorien has led the amalgamation of two boards into one, and helped create the largest volunteer organization in Dundalk.
This year, the Award Ceremony will be held tonight at 6:30 PM at the Elmwood Community Centre.
