Six years and a million dollars later — the Ministry of Environment has officially approved the Hanover Walkerton landfill site expansion project.
Hanover Councillor Peter Hambly is thrilled with the news that will add another 30 plus years of life of the landfill.
Hambly tells Bayshore Broadcasting News the expansion work will be split into four phases — and it will begin as soon as the engineer work is finalized.
The first phase should be complete in 2013 — around the same time the current landfill site is expected to reach its full capacity.
By the time phase one is complete, six million dollars will have gone into the project.
Hambly says Hanover and Brockton were wise to begin planning for this expansion project six years ago.
Over that time Hambly says there have been a few obstacles, but in the end he says the project has turned out very well.
The one million dollars spent to date on the project was used on engineer assessments, scientific work and reports, test holes and for the Environmental Assessment.
