The Walkerton Library is celebrating its 97th birthday today.
A fresh new look for a century old building is the birthday wish of staff at the Walkerton Library.
They have proposed 59 thousand dollars in renovations.
Branch Supervisor Tracy Knapp says the circulation desk is too tall and causes accessibility issues for children and those in wheelchairs or scooters.
Knapp says the lay out is also poorly designed for a modern library — and it lacks space for an extra computer and a proper book return area.
Staff have also complained about the lack of workspace, poor lighting and privacy issues.
Knapp feels these issues could be resolved by switching the circulation, office and work area to the children’s section.
Now the library will seek funding.
Brockton Council has donated five thousand dollars and Knapp says they will dip into the library’s reserve funds.
She hopes they can raise the rest of the money through a Trillium grant and community donations.
She hopes to get the project underway by next Fall.
