The lawyer for a London family that has launched a two million dollar lawsuit against Blue Mountain resort, and the London District Catholic School Board says they simply want answers.
Barbara Legate says Linda Steel and Brian Reurink were disappointed when a coroners inquest was not called into the death of their daughter.
17 year old Elizabeth Reurink died when she hit a tree two years ago on a school field trip.
Legate says she sent the coroner a list of questions that need to be looked at, but recently heard no inquest would be held and that is when the family decided to launch the lawsuit.
According to the lawyer, the family suffered “unusual harm from the callous manner in which they heard of their daughters’ death.”
They were told about a ski accident and while driving three hours to Blue Mountain to be at her side, they called the hospital and were transferred to the coroner and told the girl was dead.
Linda Steel is actually an elected trustee with the London Catholic board.
She claims her daughter didn’t want to ski on the hill where she died but was encouraged to do so by a teacher.
The lawsuit also questions the Boards’ waver policy which attempts to clear it of any responsibility, when it is part of the curriculum.
Both the school board and Blue Mountain have filed papers intending to fight the lawsuit.
